An all-in-one solution...

In this article we cover:

  • The gut plays an integral part in weight management for various reasons including the regulation of inflammation that drives weight gain; S+B is anti-inflammatory and protects the gut barrier.

  • S+B exhibits anti-diabetic action partly due to powerful antioxidant capacity

  • S+B’s potent prebiotic action boosts the novel probiotic, Akkermansia Muciniphila that has efficacy in preventing diabetes, obesity and cardiometabolic insults, and boosting weight loss

Pomegranate & weight loss

Metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes), obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type II diabetes have reached epidemic proportions, and are inextricably linked to diet.

The gut microbiome has been touted as the therapeutic solution based on increasing research as a viable treatment option in obesity and related metabolic diseases by influencing energy metabolism, inflammation and the immune system.

Pomegranate extract (POMx)

POMx plays a key role in gut health due to its prebiotic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory attributes that further protect the gut and digestive system.

Further gut microbes play a part in the detoxification of toxins, in turn helping out the immune system since toxins suppress immunity.(1) As it turns out excess toxin build up also hampers weight loss due to inflammation that these toxins cause by over stimulating the immune system. Further most toxins are lipophilic meaning they reside in fat tissue, making them more difficult to remove.

Pomegranate extract (POMx) provides powerful antioxidant power as well as boost the body’s endogenous antioxidant system made up of an array of detoxification enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, catalase and superoxide dimutase that all play a role in degrading toxin induced free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide, lipid hydroperoxides and superoxide.

Glycine

The amino acid glycine in our Skin+Beyond blend boosts gut barrier integrity and function, in turn lowering or controlling inflammation.(2) Remember inflammation is the driver of all ageing related diseases and gut inflammation affects all bodily systems including weight and metabolic issues and skin health.

Glycine has the ability to influence multiple pathways that cause the onset of metabolic syndrome; hence its usefulness in both preventing and treating metabolic conditions such as obesity and type II diabetes.

Glycine levels in blood plasma are commonly found to be sub optimal in obesity and type II diabetic subjects. By adding glycine to the diet, a number of metabolic pathways related to type II diabetes are positively affected and insulin secretion is also improved. Further there is some evidence of glycine’s glucose binding properties that reduce the amount of circulating blood glucose.(3)

Glycine exerts an inhibitory effect (red) on oxidative stress, glucose secretion from the liver and food intake. It also promotes (green) positive hormonal and immune function signals, up-regulates methylation expression, enhances detoxification and mitochondrial function.(4) Dietary glycine intake in obese mice was seen to enhance both glucose tolerability and lower blood fats or triglycerides, in turn preventing weight gain. In a different study using high fat and high sugar fed rats, comparable effects were observed where supplemental glycine intake protected them from liver damage.

Glycine demonstrates effectiveness in lowering blood pressure, normalising fatty acid metabolism and reducing the inflammatory response.

In a study using 60 subjects with metabolic syndrome, it was shown that an intake of 15g per day of glycine had a significant reduction in oxidative stress markers and in systolic blood pressure.(5)

At this level of supplementing, it is possible to reach a 7 fold increase in blood plasma levels of glycine.(6)

Novel anti-ageing molecule meets next generation probiotic

The ellagitannins found in pomegranate extract get hydrolysed in the gut releasing ellagic acid and punicalagins, which in turn get further processed by the gut flora or bacteria into an exciting novel anti-ageing molecule, namely urolithin A. Further these pomegranate compounds boost the growth of the next generation gut probiotic, Akkermansia Muciniphila that further enhances the anti-diabetic and metabolic properties of POMx helping to prevent pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and obesity.(7)

Akkermansia Muciniphila is without doubt a potent, effective weight loss and weight management probiotic.

What is incredible about this, is that there is one company in the World selling this next generation probiotic for £85 per month and similarly one company selling the novel anti-ageing molecule, Urolithin A for £75 per month.
